Rocks In My Socks has made all the way Down Under - families in Australia and New Zealand and having some Rocks In My Socks fun!
It has been quite a year so far. We have been on an amazing adventure bringing the Rocks In My Socks experience to classrooms and libraries.
The kids are lovin’ it. They are sharing their own stories of ‘rocks in their socks’ and what they are doing to deal with them.
The kids are taking turns playing the AR games – and – there is nothing more adorable than when they get up to learn Gracie’s dance moves in Gracie’s Dancetime Jamboree.

Captivating the judges and garnishing attention amongst the thousands of entries, Rocks In My Socks made the Top Ten Shortlist for the Most Innovative Use of Augmented Reality in UK’s Augmented Reality Summit awards. Other shortlisted entries included National Geographic and Qualcomm – Sesame Prototype Playset.
The AR Summit’s augmented reality awards is a platform designed to do just that – recognizing & rewarding those successfully adopting AR, highlighting those who are producing creative strategies, adopting new techniques, enhancing technologies and pushing forward the industry – creating a name for the world of AR.
Balance Studios, creator of the Rocks In My Socks characters, illustration and AR interactivity, was invited by Qualcomm’s Vuforia group to the AREvent 2012 in Santa Clara, CA as a trade show booth partner.
Because of their unique and innovative uses of the Vuforia Augmented Reality platform, Balance was able to help bring traffic to the booth by demonstrating the software’s versatility as they unveiled new ways to push the limits of Vuforia with uses in Augmented Reality in museum exhibits, multi-person gaming, and some yet to be disclosed, proprietary uses.
The biggest draw to the booth was Rocks In My Socks…it was in event Hit! Visitors and other trade show booth attendees were visiting Balance in the Qualcomm booth so they could see and play it first hand.
AREvent is where the people working on and using Augmented Reality technologies come together to explore best practices and innovations in software development, tools, business strategies, design and marketing. Developers, technologists, marketers, hardware manufacturers, mobile operators, researchers, designers, startups, business developers, and entrepreneurs gather to share their experiences and learn from their peers.
The Manitowoc Public Library hosted the first live reading of Rocks In My Socks during their monthly Tuesday night reading club.
The book’s co-author, Pamela Dennison, captivated the young readers with the endearing story. They were all sitting on the floor asking questions and talking about the ‘rocks in their socks’.
When the story was finished, we brought out the iPad2 that was hooked up to an HD screen, and showed the kids all of the Augmented Reality games. It was so much fun to watch their sheer amazement as they were trying to figure out how the characters and games were magically appearing.
As an extra added treat, there were four iPad stations set up where the children could play and experience the Augmented Reality games first hand. While some were playing the AR games, others were at the coloring stations coloring their favorite DinosaurUs ExploreUs characters.
No child left empty handed as there were giveaways all night: Rocks In My Socks book, coloring books, and cuddly pink and white striped socks with one silly sized rock.

Hello out there!
We know it has been a few weeks since our last post so we wanted to let you know everything that has been going on…So exciting!
Rocks In My Socks is getting some fantastic reviews and is now International! The book was sent to the UK, Canada, Mexico, and all around the US – all in just 5 shorts weeks after it was released.
Folks world-wide are excited by the unique Augmented Reality integration of the book’s activities and the free Rock Launcher game, with the iPad2 and iPhone/iPod 4th Gen Apps already downloaded in over 30 countries! Yahooooo
We also want to thank everyone who is supporting the book, sending us their feedback, and leaving awesome and constructive reviews in the App store. Please keep them coming.
Some of this feedback has just touched our hearts, when we hear about how people rally around the books concept of acceptance, how it is being used to help sick children in hospitals and how the activities, (even without the AR), are making them smile. Well, that just makes our day!
Here is an email from a Hospital waiting room volunteer…
“Wow! I had such a great time tonight at the Florida Hospital for Children. I spent about 3 hours with the kids in the Emergency Room waiting room area. I pulled out the Rocks in my Socks book and we were reading through the pages together and even doing some of the activities. They liked Emilio’s riddles and liked finding the hidden rocks in the landscape picture, they matched up the Dinosaur shadows with the character pretty well. Some were easier to get than others. Great idea about the books and everything!! I’m so excited and we all had a total blast with it all.”
~ Heather – Florida Hospital for Children Volunteer
We just launched the Kindle e-book too! Be on the lookout for the Nook eBook as it is in the Barnes & Nobles review process as we type this update. The eBooks are created with the story and activities.
*IMPORTANT FYI. To play the Augmented Reality games however, a hard copy of the book is STILL needed:-)
Everyday there seems to be something new and exciting – We will keep you posted!
